Szafnauer has engine and funding for 12th F1 team plan:
— Otmar Szafnauer confirmed he has secured financial backing and a committed car manufacturer for a potential 12th Formula 1 team. He revealed the plan has been in development quietly for over a year, aiming to be ready if a new team entry process opens.
“The finances are in place. What I can tell you is that the financiers are serious people and they have the financial wherewithal to be able to fund a Formula 1 team.”
— Szafnauer noted the manufacturer is already “in place” and ready to supply engines. While the identities of the investors and OEM remain undisclosed, he stated the group is also open to purchasing an existing team if a fair price is offered.
“The car manufacturer that also wants to join Formula 1’s in place. It’s just a matter of the timing being right to actually get the opportunity to start the 12th team.”
— He acknowledged the challenge of entering under current rules, citing the anti-dilution fee and startup costs, but emphasized his goal to return as a team co-owner like Toto Wolff.
“It’s difficult when people aren’t selling. And I understand why – there’s a new Concorde [agreement] coming. That’s all been agreed.”
— If forced to build from scratch, Szafnauer projected a timeline of 2028 or 2029, but said with the right hires, tools, and factory development, the team could be competitive within three to four years.
“With the resources I’ve put together, within a short time, I could be competitive. I would hire the right individuals. The car manufacturer that will produce a powertrain will be very competent.”
“We would have a new windtunnel, new R&D facilities, new factory – a little bit like what Lawrence Stroll did [with Aston Martin].”
“When I was at British American Racing, in year two we finished tied fourth in points in the world championship, and we started from nothing.”
“I don’t know when or if the process for a 12th team will open up, but if it does, I want to be ready.”
