Gamers Nexus, working with Level1Techs and outside researchers, published an extensive investigation into retail LG OLED TVs, including the G5. Packet captures reportedly showed the TVs scanning the local network for phones and smartwatches that were not part of the test, as well as collecting nearby Wi-Fi network names and signal strength.
After triggering the voice assistant, the microphone continued capturing audio even while the screen appeared to be off. Spoken phrases were also recorded as plain-text logs on the TV.
When the Ethernet cable was disconnected, those logs remained stored on the TV. Once the connection was restored, the stored data was transmitted.
